seeking wilderness
Seeking Wilderness documents the process of removing lawn and nurturing a myriad of living things through research, specific plantings and chance; allowing for a micro wilderness in the artist's ecologically degraded backyard in Midtown Omaha. Johanson has been rejuvenating this landscape as an act of resistance in an era of increasingly sterilized and controlled landscapes since 2008. This sensory rich space serves as a respite from human made banality and cataclysmic environmental anxiety as a way to place our contemporary value systems within a broader historical land-based context. Seeking Wilderness shifts between pragmatic documentation and experiential ephemera, where the backyard becomes a place of exoticism for forgotten communities and a record in a time of cataclysmic change.
